Cape Spear

This piece was inspired by my trip in 2016 to Cape Spear. Cape Spear is located in Newfoundland and is the most Eastern point of North America. It is an amazingly beautiful place.

During my visit, I spent time in St. John’s and also in Gander. The area is filled with thick forests of trees and lakes, the kind of landscapes paintings are made from. The cape itself however is a wide open space, a complete opposite from the rest of the area I saw, yet equally moving.

As I arrived, the first site were some large beautiful waves, rolling and crashing onto the land. Around the side, the water beats against a cliff with little fanfare and no place to go. Because of this the waves roll under and come up from the bottom; an image that looks more like upside-down rain drops than waves.

Even though the Cape is wide open, there is still sparse patches of wild flowers that manage to grow in spite of the heavy winds that prevail.

The Cape is a place of beauty and I will remember the feelings I had being there. Refreshing, open, relaxing, awe. While those feelings are good ones to carry, this trip will also be tainted with sadness as it was the last time I saw a friend and colleague of mine.  Those good memories will always carry a bit of sadness, yet combined, they serve as a reminder that the world is a bigger place than any one of us.

The words above can’t capture the emotion of this place. Writing was never my forte. However I have tried to capture it in the music. I hope you will find it. I hope you will enjoy.
